Arabian Night's seems to be a theme at this years Fringe, there are a number of productions taking their basis in the old tales. Smudge Clinic's production of a contemporary Arabian Night set in a 10 story tower block has a distinct Eastern European feel to it, with actors progressing through the story, whilst commenting on their own actions and thoughts.
At times this makes for difficult viewing, as the changes are so snappy we do not recognise who the speech is actually directed towards. This, however, is more than made up for by the enthusiasm and vigor with which the young cast attacks the play.
There are a lot of rough edges to this production, with actors constantly talking over each other and some poor direction, which did not take into account the theatre space.
One area in which the company does excel is the comedic talents of Greg Foster and Daniel Benoliel who help to enliven the whole play.
It is nice to see this rarely performed play by Germany 's Roland Schimmelpfennig, although not a great production, the script still carries a lot of power and mysticism that we associate with the Arabian Nights. |
