It's definitely dark, deep and violent. Not what you'd expect from a puppet show. It begins with a display from the Puppeteers, presenting to the audience their characterisations. This seemed a little odd, as I was expecting a puppet show. So, minimal human interaction, right? Wrong. This up-front presentation of human display works as a) a brash way of saying ‘this is a puppet show' and b) it creates a surreal relationship between reality and that of the world of the play.
The grace and physicality with which the puppets are made to move is stunning. High praises to the Puppeteers and the Director of Puppetry, Rod Primrose. The set and puppet design are equally admirable. This company is obviously worthy of their success in Australia and Internationally.
