Emma's Mystery by Saltmine Theatre company, written and directed by Richard Hasnip, is about a young girl called Emma (Laura Dunning), studying for her RE exam when suddenly the characters come to life in her bedroom and different stories from the bible are performed by the remaining cast.
There are some nice pieces of physical theatre thrown into this production and all the performers are confident and skilled. The show is also high on audience participation as the cast often turn to the audience asking question such as "What is important in your life?" or seek encouragement and engagement as they play charades with messages such as "When you are lost god will find you" At this point I felt the show slipped out of context slightly as the performers took on a more serious role with a preaching undertone as they addressed the audience on topics such as "Love thy Neighbour"
Since Religious Education classes tend to cover a range of religion faiths and beliefs, it would have been nice if this was reflected in this production rather than merely focusing on Christianity. This in turn made it less challenging and inspiring as a piece of modern theatre. I left feeling a little short changed as I wondered about the company's motives...
