Sixteen Performers: One Vision . This is the theory behind the showcase from new company Music Theatre Scotland . The young ensemble intends to bring musical theatre to the masses, touring their chirpy shows to the Highlands , Islands and beyond. They believe that Musical Theatre is more accessible than its less tuneful counterpart and invite you to see exactly what their sixteen performers can do at the Gateway Theatre on Elm Row in Edinburgh this week.
One Vision showcases the 'finger-clicking good' young girls and guys as they sing their way through old and new musicals. From George Cukor's 1954 classic "A Star is Born" to Broadway's 2004 smash "Wicked".
Some exceptionally strong solo performances feature from Maggie Brown, Jennifer Davidson and Katy-Anne Monaghan, while the group numbers are all consistently very strong. It would have been so nice to have seen more input from the creative team as well, but Artistic Director John Naples Campbell insisted that the showcase was all about the raw vocal talents that he's determined to keep in Scotland . 'We have to nurture young Scottish talent, Music Theatre Scotland is going to do that: give young talent a place to shine on Scottish Stages. We can't let all these excellent performers drift down to London .'
If this is true, that there is so much young talent in Scotland , then why are there rumours abound that Perth Theatre is casting its autumn production of "Oliver!" from the West End instead of using the abundant wealth of home grown talent? I'm sure John and the MTS guys will be extending an invitation to the creative team in Perth when they produce their first full-scale musical in November. Best of luck.
'One Vision' runs until Thursday 8th at the Gateway.
