The return of Boilerhouse to the fringe after their 2003 production Sister Sister was highly anticipated. Reading information before I went to this production I was looking forward to a highly spectacular show as performers spin and twirl, leap and jump all at a height well above the gravel ground below them. Yet coming out I was left feeling let down.
Taking as it's setting the famous Bridge in Kosovo seperating the two halves of the city and following the lives of two girls, one from each. The action takes place in their childhood, through their teenage years and into womanhood where they both embark on contrasting lives. Using a large video screen and a huge booming dance soundtrack all help to add to the spectical and mask; that is basically an ariel acrobatics show with a story. The performers, although very graceful in the air did not do justice to the story, which at times seemed full of cliches and overtly simplistic. The most watchable part of this production was the ariel technicians who, acting as counter balances aided the actors into flight. Their leaps from the top of the structure to the ground below were more watchable than the on-stage action, these were the true performers of the piece. If you are looking for a spectacle then you will find none bigger or louder than this. Unfortunately that is all it is, as the acting and script let this piece down.
