The Lunatic, The Sportsman & The Woman Next Door written by Stanley Eveling, once a Professor of moral philosophy at Edinburgh University , is a comical and challenging play set in a house where you are faced with all sorts of immoral goings on.
Elsie (Esme Harwood), a lady who looks like she's had a hard life, promotes her school girl daughter, Doris' (Laura Stewart) body, enticing Teddy the sportsman (Johnny Lloyd) with her thin hips, which he gladly takes up as a new sport.
The Lunatic (Ben Hadley), sits in an almost comatose state, coming alive occasionally with absurd rants and surprising physical attacks. Esme Harwoods strong and witty performance was a joy to behold!
The play suggests that all this is the norm, and in some strange way as you watch it, it doesn't always feel too far from some realities. The characters are likable even though you wouldn't want them as friends, family or even neighbours for that matter.
Performed in an intimate theatre by Blue Hug Theatre Company this play sets out to make you laugh, and leave you with a few question marks to ponder on.
