The Fittie Woman

The students' show is as much a part of Aber dee n as rowies are. In dee d the cast were handing out rowies, on Union Street during the International food market on Saturday as part of their promotional campaign. The show, a bit like their culinary counterpart, is something special to Aber dee n, always full of local references, which like the rowie probably don't stand up much to international competition, but for all that I'll take a rowie any day.

I have been to more student shows than I can remember, an annual event run each year by the city's students with the sales proceeds going to boost the post Easter two week rag campaign, raising money for a host of local charities. Over the years the format has never changed - a musical comedy brimmed full of energy and enthusiasm from its amateur cast, a sharp, funny, topical and well-written script with a few star turns by the better performers with a particular skill. What does change is the scriptwriters' ability to take the format and reinvent it into something, which is very now.

This year ' s show is a Pygmalion reality TV romp, not Faking it, but Folking it- with real Aber dee n folk in it. As usual at the heart of it there is life's old story of loon falling in love with quine and fit rare entertainment it is in between time. If there is a contrast to previous years, it is perhaps the smaller venue, at Hilton, whilst HMT is currently being renovated, which may be the cause or the effect of a smaller cast than in previous years. Still there is a cast of thirty in it, banging out every song, pun and step with such enthusiasm that it makes it difficult not to come away with enthusiasm for the production.
