Ezra is ten. He has a sister who's really annoying, a pal called Spud and a Dad who's a soldier. Really, he hasn't seen his Dad in ages, he lives in Manchester now, but Ezra likes to make up stories in his room about his Dad, the Action Man.
Graeae imaginatively incorporate sign language, audio description and excellent fun into this extremely touching story of a boy who likes stories and how he learns to make his own happy endings. Mike Kenny's Diary of an Action Man is a truly imaginative piece of theatre: an adventure for both children and adults alike. Jenny Sealey utilises Lisa Ducie's creative design, transporting audience from bedroom to bus station, to Manchester and back. Ezra (Amit Sharma), Dad (David Ellington), Louise (Cherylee Houston) and Karen Spicer as Mum, Spud and a host of other characters, are all superb in their roles, adding charm, wit and energy to their respective parts.
Ezra leads the audience to Manchester to rescue his Dad, but soon discovers that Dad was not injured or captured by the enemy but has separated from his mum. The journey is as moving as it is exciting, and well worth the fare, for Ezra and audience alike.
