Give me a girl at an impressionable age and she is mine for life!
School mistress Jean Brodie is quite the character, deluded by romance and passion - she worships everything Italian – from Giotto to Mussolini. She is glamourous and confident, well educated and articulate. She is a strong character and influences everyone around her with her passions, however misguided. In deed, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie was always destined for the stage, filled with dramatic irony, witty dialogue and conflict - the crème de la crème is of course the character of Jean Brodie herself, still one of the greatest roles written for an actress.
The excellent Norma Kinnear takes on the famous role in this production by young company Random ACT. It is a great challenge for any actress to perform a role more famously known for being played by the fabulous Maggie Smith, but Kinnear personifies all that we know, love and hate about Brodie in her prime, aided by the equally talented Carrie Mancini and Gabrielle Pavone, as Headmistress MacKay and school girl Sandy respectively.
There are loads of laughs with this production, some outstanding performances and even though the pace is stifled by some overlong scene changes, this is a good production of a terrific play. Head along to St. Bride's Centre this week and you will not be disappointed.
