More Grim(m) Desires

This is a fantastical piece of modern dance theatre full of expression and hidden desires. Based around classic fairy tales such as Snow White, Rumpelstiltskin and the Frog king, it deals with themes such as jealousy, fidelity, betrayal and envy.  It takes a humanist approach, swinging often to the darker side of one's imagination.

The fact that it is based around fairytales in some sense makes it clearer and more relative to the audience, adding to the simplicity of the visual impact.  Maresa Von Stockert choreography is flawless, the result slightly hallucinatory, it appears so effortless that you almost imagine this piece might have been dreamt up the night before, its dream-like effect makes you wonder at times as to whether you are actually watching human beings perform as they sink seductively in and out of each others arms, weave, tease and manipulate one another's bodies, creep round corners and hang from heights.

Rapunzel Princesses shed their innocence in an eerie, witch like manner; their hair is chopped repeatedly until the stage is covered in a mass of Golden Locks.  In other moments you'll see the woman pick their male companions up as if they were infants, made of thin air, switching from subversive to submissive characters throughout.

The narrator's, Russel Raisey, v oice keeps it real and injects humour, taking you away for moments from the visual sensations of the performance.  His modern sarcasm and jokes act in contrast to the creative and grim mimes of the performers.

This is one performance in which you will most definitely be awaiting the second half to begin.  A contemporary, fresh, enigmatic piece of dance for the stage!
