Young company Music Theatre Scotland come to the Bedlam Theatre, Edinburgh this week with 3hree a trio of musical one act plays set in America with a shared theme of dreams, dream lives and living out dreams and fantasies.
The Mice is the story of an extra-marital affair between Allan, the vermin exterminator, and Virga, the dressmaker's wife. She breeds mice and sets them free in their town so that they can conduct their affair in the town's people's homes while they are being fumigated. The young pair dreams of a home of their own in another town far away and when Allan's wife threatens moving to California they realise that they must be together no matter what. The consequences are deadly; the music is divine and sung beautifully.
The Lavender Girl is the story of Colin; a bit of a heartbreaker, who nearly knocks over a young girl in his car one night. He becomes enchanted with the girl and takes her dancing on The Hill but when the dancing ends the girl disappears and on his journey to find her he discovers a harsh reality about his new love. This is a sweet tale of love and fantasy and is sung and played nicely by the young couple.
The Flight of the Lawn-Chair Man is the strongest of the one act plays. Its quirky humour and strong, fun characters perform this tale of a young man called Jerry Gorman who decides to fly his deck chair into the sky with the aid of four hundred helium balloons. Jerry manages to fly to 16,000 feet with the aid of airborne apparitions Leonardo Da Vinci, Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart, while girlfriend Gracie and Mama Gorman fight with an official for Jerry's right to the skies. This is an excellent one act musical, superbly performed and a brilliant way to end the evening.
Music Theatre Scotland has produced this triplet of musical one-acts with passion and energy. A strong cast perform enthusiastically and sing superbly throughout these playlets, 3hree is quirky, entertaining and mostly good fun.
