If after hearing my songs, just one human being is inspired to say something nasty to a friend, or perhaps to strike a loved one, it will all have been worthwhile.
Welcome to the mind of Dr Tom Lehrer, Harvard professor, mathematician and Americas finest satirist. Tomfoolery is simplistic to say the least, consisting of no more than some bitingly funny songs strung together by some tenuous and at times extraordinarily surreal links, but it is the unsophisticated nature of the format that makes this show so enjoyable.
The four performers; Dillie Keane, star of Fascinating Aida , Camp Caberet Duo Kit and the Widow and the young and talented Matthew Wolfenden, open with a rather nervy and tentative Be Prepared. All the performers seem to be suffering from a lack of confidence which casts a slight shadow over the first of many cheesy links. Littered with obvious gags and comments about the state of the world and American foreign policy in particular, although they raise a titter the quality of the links has a long way to go before it can match the inventiveness of Lehrer's lyrics, especially on some of the excellent songs which cover all the bases offending everyone along the way, from the church in The Vatican Rag , College Education with Bright College Days and errr Wildlife in Poisoning Pigeons in the Park .
In a strong collection of songs there are a number that do stand head and shoulders above the rest - usually due to the completely ridiculousness of them. Particularly the perfectly pronounced Elements Song , sung to the tune of Gilbert and Sullivan's, Modern Major General . And my own favourite I got it from Agnes , tracking a sexually transmitted disease through various partners, male, female and well beast.
Lehrer was never a great composer, and the music does lack quality, yet the lyrics are brilliant and considering that all these songs were written pre 1963 highly relevant to today's society. Just listening to the lyrics of Send in the Marines it sounds like it was written to accompany the Iraqi war.
An entertaining and chuckle-some evening, presided over by the Warholian painting of Lehrer that hangs on the stage. Oh and for your own information Lehrer is alive and well, although he has been trying to spread rumours otherwise recently. Looking at cashing in on the dead artists record sales I bet!!! These Mathematicians – you can't trust them an inch!
