The year is 2030, the place is New York , and the soundtrack is rock: lots of it.
Vampires Rock is the new show from Steve Steinman, creator and star of The Meat Loaf Story , who shot to fame on Stars in Their Eyes in 1993. The plot is (very loosely) based on the Dracula story, with Steinman playing nightclub-owning vampire Baron Von Rockula, who is looking (as vampires always seem to be) for a new bride. This is a bride with a difference though: she has to be able to sing.
See, Von Rockula (as the name suggests) is partial to a bit of rock ‘n' roll and, when he isn't draining the blood of virgins, keeps himself entertained by howling out classic rock numbers. Therefore when seeking out a new bride, he's simultaneously auditioning for a lead singer.
He finds one in Pandora (Zoe Sharman), who enters with a sweet, uptight rendition of ‘Close to You', then is rapidly seduced by the rock god (the Baron) and ends up belting out ‘Holding out for a Hero' in her underwear.
The storyline is little more than ‘vampire seeks bride, vampire finds bride' and what little dialogue exists between musical numbers is a mixture of crude jokes and knowing references to song lyrics. After her first encounter with Von Rockula, Pandora sighs that once upon a time there was light in her life, but now there's only love in the dark. She's told she's having a total eclipse of the heart; cue ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart'.
With a five piece band (in full undead gear) rocking the stage and fireworks and dry ice aplenty, the music is the focus of the show, even if the links between songs and narrative are sometimes rather tenuous. From Aerosmith to Whitesnake and Judas Priest to AC/DC, the soundtrack encompasses a host of rock anthems. Steinman and Sharman's vocals are powerful and the band can certainly play. The show closes with a rousing ‘Bat Out Of Hell', revealing just why Steinman has made such a success out of playing Meat Loaf.
Take away the fangs and fake blood and brush away the storyline and what's left isn't so much a musical as an excuse to string together a host of classic rock anthems. It certainly rocks though. And on this showing, so do vampires! |
