Once upon a time there was a girl called Wendy who lived in a house with her mother, father and dog Nana. She loved to hear stories and every night, someone else who loved to hear stories would be listening at the window.
The Wee Stories revival production of JM Barrie's classic Peter Pan is a welcome return of a fantastically unique portrayal of one of the greatest children's stories ever written. True to their usual form, Andy Cannon and Shona Reppe join forces for what is easily one the best theatre productions I have seen this year. Pitched perfectly for its target audience of 3-7 year olds, both Reppe and Cannon captivate and excite the young audience while simultaneously inspiring the adults in the audience to become better story tellers for their kin.
The script is beautifully considered with intelligent adult humour to keep the grown ups happy and colourful comic portrayals to keep the intended audience captivated from start to finish. Particular note should be paid to Reppe's ‘Mermaid' and Cannons 'Captain Hook ‘as comedy moments that steal the show.
This creamy smooth production also features the multi talented David Trouton, donning a couple of floppy ears and occasionally whimpering requests as the ever enjoyable Nana, but it's his performance of his original piano score for this production that sets it apart from its contemporaries.
All in all a fantastic day out for boys and girls who never want to grow up.
At the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh until Saturday 24th December.
