Anyway...
Review by Lisa Bennie, August 2006

What will happen to the world now all the great sitcoms are gone? Friends grew up, Sex and the City settled down. Will and Grace got less neurotic, and now what? Will anarchy ensue, will people roam the streets in search of Ross-look-a-likes, will the ‘Rachel do’ come back in, will Jimmy Choos go out of stock and will everyone have a gay best friend? Well don’t go crazy just yet is the word, situation comedy could be having a second wind, but this time in the theatre and with three Scottish lassies who have a lot to say.

Vanessa (Lisa Borland), Yolande (Wendy Brindle) and Megan (Sara-Jane McGeachy) are best-pals, and as is common with best-pals the all have a specific role to play in the friendship. Megan is the bossy and angry one, Yolande is the spiritual one, and Vanessa is the ditsy one. But are they all really the roles they play, or are they just these roles to fit with the group? A journey of discovery via tequila, a man from Halfords, fat toes, lip hair and tongue-twisters.

A simple, but nice idea stemming from a sketch performed at the Traverse Lizard back in 1999, it draws on the elements that made the aforementioned sitcoms so successful. We join the girls in what seems like the middle of a typical night, they have a long history and inside jokes, thus are easy to warm towards. The main problem with this comedy play is that it feels as though you’ve seen it all before, but slicker and funnier. The cast are all adequate in their limited roles, but what’s lacking is imagination and originality. There are funny moments but the sense of deja-vu makes the punch lines lose their punch and each moment predictable. It’s great to see a Scottish women’s comedy-play at the Fringe this year, but is it just wishful thinking that there will eventually be great roles for Scottish women on the stage?
