Rock-a-bye B-Boy is about 4 boys who love to break dance. Their every waking thought is about dancing, jumping, spinning, doing tricks and figuring out new moves. When the four friends come together in a dream they embark on an incredible journey of discovery. In dreamland the companions develop enhanced dance skills and become caricatures of their selves. As they toy with different movement styles they explore the isolation felt when you are different and don’t fit into the norm, manipulate how the other members of the group dance and learn that to get out of dreamland safely, you must work together.
Random Aspekts are an exciting and entertaining group of men who seem to really enjoy the opportunity of performing to an audience. The show itself comes across as a vehicle created to showcase the collective and individual talents of the four dancers and although expertly performed with often breath taking precision, after the first ten minutes the brilliance of the show loses momentum.
There seems to be very little holding the performance together other than the talent of the dancers and where that may be enough in the dance off competitions break dance’s ‘serving’ culture has to offer, one feels slightly cheated that this show is marketed as having something additional of substance in it’s tagline ‘bedtime stories for kids’.
Saying that, there is absolutely no denying that all company members are great dancers and that their performances would capture the imagination of their target audience but when the talent is of such a high standard and the performance seems to pander to commercial expectations you can’t help but feel a little disappointed that you are not seeing these dancers at their full potential.
