Pauline Goldsmith: Should Have Had the Fish
Review by Barry Woods, August 2006

Pauline Goldsmith is a troubled soul.  She’s troubled by her family and their not very PC opinions.  She’s worried about thinking unclean thoughts about the holy-ghost.  She’s baffled by how natural disasters happen even on Boxing Day and she despairs at the thought of getting old and ending up in care.

Throughout the 60 minute duration of this one woman show, you are treated to an in depth look into the psyche of a woman alarmed by human nature.  Based in Pauline Goldsmith’s Bistro, a 30 something waitress takes your order at the door and proceeds to serve up healthy portions of despair, guttural humour and passionate storytelling.

There is something quite reminiscent of the old school storytellers like Dorothy Paul and to some extent even Harry Lauder in Pauline Goldsmith’s performance.  Her material is fresh and funny and definitely based in the here and now referencing both Tommy Sheridan and the rise in anti-Semitism in the same breath.

The format for the show is a little gimmicky with tales being prompted from the kitchen though this is overcome as most of her dishes contain a huge dollop of irony, a gentle sprinkling of blasphemy and just the right amount of crudity to taste.
