Not something that your average person would find easy to conduct: managing to get over an hour of material that rhymes, is entertaining, makes sense and actually tells a proper story. On top of this you have the fact that it’s also a mixture of Shakespearean verse and American rap…Does it work….Lets work it out
This is a one man show, accept from the Guitarist (Syd Kitchen) who only plays the guitar, albeit rather nicely. Johnny (Greig Coetzee) is as crazy as his character jumping around the stage, lets face it, you would need some degree of energy and stamina to carry this off, whilst keeping the rhythm upbeat and a tight hold on the audience. Especially when they accidentally miss the last verse, whilst they get their head round the previous. In an odd fitting way it does work, words bounce out at you, and just as you’re starting to loose the thread you’re hooked in again like a good stand up. Is the show too long – probably, can Johnny carry off a one man show – definitely.
A story of love and faith, that travels to hell and back. Coetzee himself describes his work as a mini rock opera for the spoken word, and a road movie for the stage. His previous success was with White Men with Weapons performed in 2000 where he received a Scotsman Fringe First & The Stage Best Actor Award
Johnny loves Eve, just remember that, because if you go to see this show you’ll be hearing it in several ways shapes and forms, but most of all every word possible to describe her, her ass, and her….well her ass.
