Breaking the Pope
Review by Barry Woods, August 2006

Breaking the Pope is the tale of three women and their individual
experiences of the Magdalene Laundries in an Irish Convent.  Grace recalls
her terrifying experiences from a mental institution, Claire recalls her
life beforehand and Josephine struggles with her illegitimacy and her
inherent Catholic guilt.

From the moment you enter the Baby Belly, you leave behind Edinburgh’s Old
Town and enter an eerily realistic chapel setting.  Throughout what are
essentially three terrifying monologues about the treatment of these women,
you as an audience member experience the oppression of the Catholic Church
and are invited to attend mass and communion.

From the moment this show starts, the hugely talented cast savour every
single word they are presented with and deliver beautifully considered and
enthralling performances.  Special note should also be paid to Carlton
Martin’s excellent script.

This is the first time Borderline Student Theatre Company have visited the
Fringe and with a debut as strong as this, I'm sure it won't be the last.

Baby Belly. 3-19 August at 1.25pm
