Stars
Review by Holly Graham, August 2006

Stars is written by Anja Hilling and adapted by Scottish based writer Sarah Colvin. A play about youth with the title being Stars, suggest that these young characters might be reaching for the heights and looking out over the horizon, and although the topic of conversation does at times lean towards ‘stars’ it is not the ones in the sky which eventually propel these young adults into the realities of adulthood.

After one night, where all 4 characters are living in limbo, from moment to moment, playing, kissing and having teenage fun, things take a dark twist and their innocence is slowly snatched as they face the outcome of ‘that’ night at the tree.

Initially the show has an almost dream like effect with sharp lighting and the symbolic tree.  Also on stage are a bed, and a washing machine used as their lives develop after a dramatic twist.  Suzanne (Elaine Catrina Gracie) a very fresh faced and natural actress is dating Calum (Jordan McCurrach) who is convinced that she is desperate to give herself to him, and yearns just for his touch, they roll in the grass, tease one another until fate walks their way…  Jenna’s (Lorna Craig) character is slightly less risky as cautiously watches Suzanne entertaining whilst snuggling up to her own love Christie (Gary Lamont) but everything changes, and so do they as a result.

This play has an upbeat soundtrack, which manages to lift the atmosphere, which at times lacks in suspense.  The Director (Kate Nelson) has made smooth scene changes and added some nice simple movements and expressions which add to the shows dreamy, trippy hippy like effect.

Shown in the new Traverse 3, your best to get there early for a decent scent where you’ll be able to see the action happening on floor level.
