Strawberries in January
Review by Tania Dron, August 2006

Is love better in the movies? Why is it that our own romantic lives never seem to live up to those on the big screen? Would love be better if there was always music in the background and the interesting women always beautiful? Francois seems to think so.

Francois runs a café in Montreal where he spends his time working on an always improving screenplay and being inspired by little beautiful moments and people’s stories. So determined is he that love should be perfect he sets up his ex flatmate/girlfriend/fiancé with his new friend, the charming and intelligent Robert, even though he knows that he still loves her himself. As if concerning himself with the love lives of two his friends is not enough, he also worries about a mysterious stranger who wandered into his café one day with a story that changed his life.  Through a series of flashbacks and snippets of the four characters day to day lives we see them search for happiness. We know that love will find a way, but which way will it choose?

This production is a real treat. The scenery is simple but elegant, a set of windows, door and table and chairs which with subtle changes goes from indoors to outdoors, town to country. The direction is clean and snappy, and each scene change and flashback is choreographed perfectly. The cast are all excellent, Gabriel Quigley as Sophie deserves special mention for her beautifully natural performance and quirky comic timing. Whether you’re in love or looking for it, this production should delight. Simply wonderful.
